(Medjugorje) - Was it a comet? Is it a montage? No, it was the Virgin Mary, eyewitnesses say about the figure of light that appeared in the sky in the minutes before a Medjugorje prayer meeting in Jesolo near Venice, Italy. Mayor, bishops and priests call for caution while a priest in attendance does not hesitate in saying that it was, indeed, the Virgin.
A mysterious figure of light has inspired a lively debate among Italians ever since it appeared in the sky briefly before a Medjugorje prayer meeting took start in Jesolo a bit north-east of Venice on October 16.
About 8.20 in the morning attendees outside the multi-hall Palaturismo suddenly stopped and looked to the sky. Meanwhile, the Blessed Sacrament was being carried into Palaturismo.
“We all saw what appeared to be a cloud but then it was clear that there was not a cloud anywhere. It was the Madonna of Medjugorje who had appeared in Jesolo to protect us” a young, un-named man from Jesolo who attended the whole day told the local newspaper Nuova Venezia.

On October 16, a boy took this photo of the sky over Jesolo near Venice, Italy, briefly before a Medjugorje meeting
“I believe that Our Lady of Medjugorje wants to be recognized, also by the Church, and that this is why the vision came”, organizer Gianluca Franzo told the paper.
“I noticed a strange shape in the sky. It was still a little dark but in 55 years I have never seen a diagonal mass cloud, like a gray statue. I thought maybe it was Our Lady who had come to help us. I was pleased to know that I was not the only one to have seen it ” eyewitness Nadia Tonon testified on Facebook on October 24.
By then, both bishops and priests had called for caution, as had Jesolo mayor Francesco Calzavara, Nuova Venezia reports in a follow-up story. Other skeptics dismissed the photo as a montage whereas still others pointed to comet Elenin which was close to the earth by mid-October, the Italian photographerDaniel Miot reports on his blog.
Though dismissing the comet theory, the photo did not convince Gianfranco Marcon, a local manufacturer of lenses who has worked with NASA:
“There were no comets or meteorites in those days but I do not believe it was Our Lady who was photographed. Think about what you can see. It is often the result of suggestion and excessive emotion because photos can really portray a bit of everything.”, he told Nuova Venezia.
Photographer Daniel Miot was present inside the multi-hall when the spectacle happened outside. Later, he returned to the spot. The photo had been taken by a boy, he was told by meeting organizers:
“Having now seen the place from the outside, there is nothing that could have created a reflex, like a window. We can also exclude possible effects from the camera equipment: A flash was not used which may have overexposed some object, and it can not be a stain or dirt on the objective which would have resulted in a dark, black figure. The explanation of the meteorite is at least bold: They leave a trail with a very different intensity of light” Daniel Miot writes on his blog.
“I think it is real, that something really appeared in the sky” he concludes.
The same conclusion was reached by Fr. Massimo Rastrelli, a Jesuit priest from Naples who has visted Medjugorje 82 times and gave a lecture during the Jesolo meeting.
“He maintained that the Madonna came to Jesolo and gave a sign to the community” Nuova Venezia reports.
