In on of the most historic votes of our generation, voters in Mississippi rejected the Personhood Amendment by a margin of 58 to 21 percent.
“Personhood USA understands that changing a culture – and changing a country – will not happen with one election, and so it is not unexpected. We thank the over one quarter of a million Mississippians who voted for Amendment 26,” said Keith Mason, president of Personhood USA, after the vote.
To put the amendment on last night’s ballot, Personhood Mississippi was required to collect and certify 89,285 signatures from registered voters. They exceeded that requirement by over 40,000 signatures.
Opponents said the measure would have made birth control, such as the morning-after pill or the intrauterine device, illegal. More specifically, the ballot measure called for abortion to be prohibited “from the moment of fertilization” — wording that opponents suggested would have deterred physicians from performing in vitro fertilization because they would fear criminal charges if an embryo doesn’t survive.
“Our opposition’s most successful tactics were steeped in falsehoods. Despite testimony from countless experts including the Mississippi Center for Public Policy, numerous high-profile attorneys, and board certified physicians and OBGYNs, Amendment 26 opponents falsely claimed that the measure would ban in vitro fertilization (it couldn’t), ban contraception (it wouldn’t), and give protections to “eggs” (it didn’t),” said Keith Ashley, from PersonhoodUSA.com
This is not the end of the Personhood Amendment, rather just the beginning. There are currently active petitions in all 50 states to add a Personhood Amendment to the ballot. Visit www.PersonhoodUSA.com and click on your state to learn the details and status of the petition.
