Speaking Tonight at The Pro-Life Community Evening in Rockaway, NJ
By Royce Hood
ROCKAWAY, NJ – Tonight I am blessed with the opportunity to share my story at Third Annual Pro-Life Community Evening at St. Cecilia’s Parish in Rockaway, New Jersey. I’ll be speaking along with Margaret Sciarrino formally from Silent No More.
I am always a pleasantly surprised when people ask me to speak. Why me? Surely there are many more people out there with far more interesting things to say. None the less, I am always humbled by the opportunity to tell my story and to share my work. So what will I say?
To be very honest I don’t do well when I overly prepare to give a speech. Instead, I do best by making some mental notes and scribbling down a few important bullet points. I prefer to let the Holy Spirit guide me as I give my witness to the crowd.
As many of my readers know I was born out of wedlock in 1983. My Mother refused a nurses recommendation to just “go to Planned Parenthood and take care of the problem.” I was born into a world where abortion was available on demand. One out of every four pregnancies in the United States has been terminated since Roe v. Wade! As we approach the 40th year of Roe, we also approach the loss of nearly 55 million babies. It’s hard to comprehend a number so large. But, it is safe to say that anyone born in the US after 1973 is a survivor!
My goal tonight is to not demonize something as tragic as abortion. In the legal profession there is a saying – “Res ipsa loquitur” which simply means “the thing speaks for itself.” Instead my goal tonight is to speak about how people can support services that offer viable alternatives to abortion such as maternity homes, pregnancy centers, and adoption services. I suspect my colleague Margret will speak about post-abortion healings, another vital ministry in the pro-life movement. My goal tonight is to offer solutions.
You see, we in the pro-life movement do not hate anyone. In fact our movement is one of open arms and love. I have been with a number of pro-lifers who on many occasions offer prayers for those involved in abortion work. We pray for the doctors, the nurses and the volunteers at abortion clinics. We pray for everyone.
We recognize that abortion does far more than to kill an innocent child. It also destroys motherhood, fatherhood and the family. It destroys hearts (literally and emotionally) and it damages souls. Abortion in many instances has even damaged the credibility of the hippocratic oath. Abortion is not good for the child, the woman or the practitioners involved. Many of my friends in the pro-life movement share a common vision to heal our culture of the harm and loss.
Please pray for me tonight as I share my testimony and try to inspire some hearts and minds. Perhaps the future President will be listening to me tonight. Perhaps the person who ultimately overturns Roe v. Wade will be in the room. Perhaps a pregnant mother contemplating abortion will give life a chance. Perhaps a young man who has impregnated his young girlfriend will be inspired to be a father. Perhaps some young Catholics will be moved to practice celibacy until marriage. Perhaps.
