Congress Receives Irrefutable Evidence of IRS Harassment of Pro-Life Organizations

(May 17, 2013 – Chicago) Today, the Thomas More Society offered over 150 pages of analysis and evidence to the House Ways and Means Committee about repeated IRS harassment of pro-life organizations. At the request of Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL), Thomas More Society President Thomas Brejcha, Executive Director Peter Breen, and Special Counsel Sally Wagenmaker, prepared the legal memorandum with solid evidence of IRS harassment of pro-life organizations dating back to 2009.

The memo details the history of IRS misconduct in the cases of three organizations represented by the Thomas More Society. The abuse dates back further than the now publicized 2010 complaints and extends beyond the IRS’s recently exposed Cincinnati office to also include the tax agency’s California operations in the charges of blatant bias.

The IRS office in El Monte, California, began harassing Christian Voices for Life of Fort Bend County, Texas in 2011. In a series of questions penned by Exempt Organization Specialist Tyrone Thomas from the California office, the IRS asked a series of unwarranted questions ordering Christian Voices for Life without any foundation, to explain its content, message, and prayers as if they were engaging in highly offensive or criminal behavior.

Coalition for Life of Iowa found itself in the IRS’s crosshairs when the group applied for tax exempt status in October 2008. Nearly ten months of interrogation about the group’s opposition to Planned Parenthood included a demand by a Ms. Richards from the IRS’ Cincinnati office unlawfully insisted that all board members sign a sworn declaration promising not to picket/protest Planned Parenthood. Further questioning by the IRS requested detailed information about the content of the group’s prayer meetings, educational seminars, and signs their members hold outside Planned Parenthood.

In yet a third matter, an IRS agent in their Chicago office repeatedly harassed Daniel and Angela Michael of Small Victories, a pro-life organization, with an intrusive investigation, calling the leaders every 2-3 weeks over the course of 2011, beginning in January of that year. The IRS officially closed its investigation in January 2012, having found no illegal activities.

Gosnell Convicted of Murder on Fatima Day! Coincidence?

Maria News- Each year on May 13, Catholics from around the world venerate Our Lady of Fatima.  On May 13, 1917 three children – Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco began witnessing apparitions of the Virgin Mary.  The apparitions took place on the thirteenth day for 6 consecutive months, followed by numerous documented miracles.

On Sunday, May 13, 1917, towards noon, a flash of lightning drew the attention of the children, and they saw a brilliant figure appearing over the trees of the Cova da Iria. The “Lady” asked them to pray for the conversion of sinners and an end to World War One, and to come back every month, on the 13th.

On July 13, Mary promised that “in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph.”

The triumph of Mary will come when evil is destroyed forever. When this happens Christ will have judged the living and dead.

Those who have special devotions to Our Lady believe that she has been given a special grace from God to appear on earth in order to bring souls into closer union with her son, Jesus Christ.  She comes for the conversion of sinners. Because of Mary many will find (or have already found) Christ.

The world is clearly upside down. Vice is praised as virtue. Authentic virtue is discarded as being politically incorrect or worse – radical. We destroy in the womb the least among us. Our culture assaults the family, motherhood, fatherhood, brotherhood and sisterhood. Our culture is attempting to re-define the meaning of manhood and womanhood. Our world values the material with very little public acknowledgment of eternity.

Before God’s Kingdom comes there will be a battle for souls, but good will ultimetly prevail over evil. Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart will triumph. Christ will come to judge the living and the dead and the Kingdom of God will reign forever.

This brings us to Kermit Gosnell. The abortionist who delivered babies only to cut their spinal cords with scissors. Today, on May 13 a Jury in Pennsylvania has convicted Gosnell of murdering three of four babies in his capital murder trial. He is also guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 abortion death of Karnamaya Mongar, a 41 year-old who died when Gosnell’s untrained staff administered an overdose of sedatives.(1)

The connection?

The mainstream media in the US has largely ignored the Gosnell trial.  Rows of seats in the courtroom reserved for the press were empty until the day that the Defense for Gosnell gave its testimony.

Likewise, we have a sitting President in the US that supports the very same practices that Gosnell provided (i.e. partial birth and late term abortion).  Obama has never mentioned the deaths of the babies killed by Gosnell, but he did attend the annual Planned Parenthood Gala and gave them praise for their work. “You’ve … got a president who is going to be right there with you, fighting every step of the way,” the president told some 1,000 attendees at a meeting of the Planned Parenthood Federation in Washington.”

Today however the pro-life movement and all those who value the sanctity of human life can breath a little easier. Gosnell has been convicted of murder. In my opinion this is a small taste of the triumph of good over evil.  No doubt Gosnells defense lawyer will appeal the verdict. But for now the media and pro-abortion politicians alike should take note that life matters. For us Catholics with Marian devotions, we believe that the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady will triumph over evil. Today is a taste of that Triumph. Perhaps a sign to all of us that justice will prevail.

Let us all pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima for the conversion of sinners. Let us pray for the conversion of hearts for all those who support abortion, who administer abortion and who have been harmed by abortion. Finally we pray for the peace of those innocent babies who have died from abortion. In Christ’s name we pray.

BREAKING: Abortionist Gosnell Convicted of Murder

LifeSiteNews.com – A Philadelphia jury has found late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell guilty of murdering three of four babies in his capital murder trial.

He is also guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 abortion death of Karnamaya Mongar, a 41-year-old legal immigrant who died when his untrained staff administered an overdose of sedatives.

The jury found Gosnell guilty of murdering Babies A, C, and D. Gosnell quipped Baby A, who was photographed by one of his employees, Andrienne Moton, was big enough to “walk me to the bus stop.”

Jurors found Gosnell had committed first-degree murder when he allowed the babies to be born alive, then “snipped” their spinal cords with scissors — a practice his employees said they saw him perform hundreds of times.

The verdict, which was announced this afternoon in the courtroom of Judge Jeffrey Minehart, means Gosnell will face the death penalty at sentencing.

The “not guilty” count related to Baby E, who uttered a noise before being killed. Jurors could not determine conclusively that such a sound represented a sign of life.

“Even if not on every count, I am thrilled today by the guilty verdict in the Gosnell murder trial,” said Bryan Kemper of Stand True Ministries. “I have waited many years for justice to be served on behalf of babies being killed by abortionists.”


The 72-year-old abortionist faced hundreds of charges, ranging from first-degree murder to racketeering to tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors Ed Cameron and Joanne Pescatore appeared relaxed before the verdict came in, according to reporter J.D. Mullane of the Buck County (PA) Courier Times, while Gosnell defense attorney Jack McMahon looked nervous.

The Virtues of Mary

A virtue is a permanent predisposition of our will towards good. Virtues can be infused by God, or they can be acquired by habitual acts proper to each virtue. However, even the infused virtues require acts proper to that virtue on the part of the recipient in order to remain a permanent disposition. That is why it says in James 2: 26, that faith, (an infused virtue), without works is dead.

Several authors have compiled lists of the most important virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Compiling such lists is a matter of judgment, since everything in the Blessed Virgin Mary, whether in thought, word, or deed was a predisposition towards the highest good, namely, God.

The permanent disposition of Mary towards God was a consequence of her fullness of grace and her divine purity. This insured that every movement emanating from her soul began from the inviolate purity of her relationship with God and returned to that same center.

The Venerable Mary of Agreda, in her monumental work consisting of private revelations given to her by the Blessed Virgin Mary entitled, The City of God, lists the theological virtues and the infused cardinal virtues supplemented by the gifts and of the Spirit as the most important virtues of Mary.

The theological virtues of faith, hope and charity cannot be acquired by human effort. They are infused gifts of God. However, we can prayerfully request these gifts from God and practice them when we receive them. Faith is the virtue that allows us to ascent to divine truths that cannot be acquired by reason alone. The virtue of hope directs our desires towards things of heaven and gives us the certitude that what God promises will be fulfilled. Charity gives us the ability to love God in the way that God desires to be loved and to love our neighbor as Christ has loved us.

The cardinal virtues, sometimes also called the moral virtues, are justice, prudence, fortitude, and temperance. Justice directs us to give to God what is due to God and to give to our neighbor what is due to our neighbor. Prudence is the virtue that enables us to judge correctly the attitude that we must have and the action that we must follow in any given situation. Fortitude is the virtue that gives us the strength to act in accordance with a well formed conscience, no matter how difficult the required action may be. Temperance is the virtue that directs us to the proper and moderate use of temporal goods.

Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange in his book, The Mother of the Savior and our Interior Life, lists the principal virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the theological virtues, the cardinal virtues, as well as humility and meekness. He says that her virtues were aided by all the gifts of the Holy Ghost. He also says that the cardinal virtues are infused and are present in any soul in the state of grace. But he mentions that there are acquired moral virtues with same name, (justice, prudence, fortitude, and temperance) which facilitate the exercise of the corresponding infused virtues.

St. Alphonsus Liguori in his book The Glories of Mary gives the following as the ten most important virtues of Mary: humility, love of God, love of neighbor, Faith, Hope, chastity, poverty, obedience, patience, and the spirit of prayer.

St. Louis De Montfort’s list of the ten most important virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary includes: profound humility, continual prayer, prompt obedience, lively faith, ardent charity, heroic patience, universal mortification, divine purity, angelic sweetness, and divine wisdom.

The list of important Marian virtues given by Venerable Mary of Agreda and that given by Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange are very similar. Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange includes meekness which could be another name for the virtue that St. Louis de Montfort calls angelic sweetness.

St. Alphonsus Liguori divides Charity into the love of God and the love of neighbor and includes the virtues of chastity and poverty which the other authors do not mention. Chastity may the virtue that St. Louis de Montfort calls divine purity. Although Mary of Agreda does not mention poverty as an important virtue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in her writings she describes Jesus, Mary, and Joseph living a life of poverty.

In our devotion to Mary we must pray that our own lives be rooted in the virtues of the Mother of our Lord.

American pro-life leaders offer encouragement to Canadian March for Life

LifeSiteNews.com – A number of American pro-life leaders traveled north of the border for Canada’s March for Life on Thursday, where they addressed the crowd and encouraged them in their fight to protect the unborn.

“The beautiful thing about fighting for human dignity is that it knows no geographic boundaries,” said Ryan Bomberger of Virginia Beach, founder of the Radiance Foundation. “We can be united all across this globe for a fight to protect human life from conception to natural death.”

Bomberger showed his familiarity with Canadian history by referencing Dr. Henry Morgentaler, the godfather of legalized abortion in that nation, who recently celebrated his 90^th birthday. The doctor’s illegal abortion activism resulted in the Supreme Court decision 25 years ago that struck down all restrictions on abortion in Canada.

“Dr. Morgentaler, the Jewish Holocaust survivor, is celebrated by some here in Canada,” Bomberger said. “How does one go from being crushed by inhuman oppression to crushing humans and being the oppressor? This is something I can’t wrap my mind around.”

“Every life is precious,” he said. “Black, white, brown, young, old, disabled, ‘differently abled,’ Down [Syndrome], quadrapalegic, deaf, girls, boys, born, and – thank God – the unborn.”

The international focus of the 2013 march naturally complemented this year’s theme, “End Female Gendercide: ‘It’s a Girl’ Should Not be a Death Sentence.”

Reggie Littlejohn, one of the foremost experts on China’s one-child policy, keynoted the event on Parliament Hill.

Her Women’s Rights Without Frontiers (WRWF) opposes “forced abortion and sex-selective abortion in China,” she told the crowd of 25,000.

Janet Morana of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, spoke alongside the founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign in Canada, Angelina Steenstra. The Canadian group is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.

David Bereit of 40 Days for Life offered two workshops at the March for Life Youth Conference on Friday. Bombarger and Littlejohn addressed the March for Life Youth Conference on Friday afternoon, as well.

Mothers as Life-Bearers: Mothers Day, Mary and the Triumph of Love

CHESAPEAKE, VA (Catholic Online) – It is Mothers Day and our hearts and minds turn to the woman who gave us life and showed us the beauty of steadfast love throughout our entire lives. This is the first Mothers Day I have faced without a mother on earth. On Tuesday, March 4, 2013, my beloved mother Ellen died in her sleep. She had struggled for months as her aging body ran out of steam.  She never fully recovered from the loss of the love of her life, her husband and my father, Duval who died in 2001. She died the day after his birthday.

I remember her last question to me the day before when we spoke over the phone, “Keith, when can I go home?”  She barely had the strength to speak. Her body was unable to support her on legs which simply seemed unwilling to cooperate any longer. It was so hard to hear her ask me when she could go home. I knew she meant that the little cinder block house where she and my dad lived. The home where they raised Derek, my youngest brother who was born the year I left home. I also knew that was not the home to which she would go to when Love finally called her.

On the day before she died I told her on the phone that Laurine – my wife whom she loved as her own daughter – and I would be coming to visit with her again on Easter weekend. She took comfort in the thought. Sadly, I knew her short term memory was not working well. I hoped she would remember. I was able to pray with her over the phone. I will forever remember that precious experience. I looked forward to the opportunity to hug her again, kiss her, and pray with her in person as I had done at Christmas.

Over Christmas, knowing she was nearing that final chapter of life, my whole extended family drove, from all over the country, to be with Ma, or Nana as the children and grandchildren called her. I did not know how physically depleted she had become in her last illness before that last visit. After all, she always had that reassuring and happy voice, accompanied by that wonderful breathy laugh, whenever we spoke on the phone.

When we commended her to the Lord and placed her next to my father in final repose, the grief I felt was only slightly relieved by the sure and certain faith I have in the triumph of Love and the final Resurrection. Yet, when I received the first of several well intended E mails this morning from friends encouraging me that she was in the presence of the Lord – which I believe with my whole heart-  I discovered that the emotions surrounding her loss are still just below the surface, only too eager to erupt again.

Grief and love are often companions.  I often tell others in my work as a Deacon of the Catholic Church, that the depth of the grief is a sign of the depth of the love; another face of love. Today, I am speaking those words to myself. However, they do not take away the pain. They only help to soften the ground within they must be planted in order bear the fruit which all love bears. Jesus said it so simply, “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. ” (John 12:24) It will take much more time and care from the Lord to give this loss the growth. I am profoundly sad today and I know the sting of death.

A priest friend captured the mystery and beauty of motherhood so well for me in the days after Ma’s death when he wrote “Dear Deacon, she will be remembered today and I will offer a Holy Mass for her soon. I know the sting; it is unique with mother, our life bearer.” Mothers are life-bearers. I was privileged this morning to give my dear wife of 37 years, Laurine, a mother’s day card. She is such a good mother and grandmother. As we grow old together, that face of love becomes all the more wondrous to me. I love to watch her smile when she embraces our five grown children and six grandchildren. She gives expression to that love which Mother’s alone can bring to each of us. It is irreplaceable.

Motherhood is a unique gift from the Lord. Jesus had a mother. It is our mother who gave us life. It is the Mother of the Lord who continues to give us the gift of the One who is Himself the Way, the Truth and the Life. Each year as we express the gratitude we feel for our earthly mother, I am increasingly drawn to reflect on one of the last gifts the Lord gave to us before his total gift of Himself on the Cross, the gift of His mother to be our own. May is the month dedicated to Mary, the Mother of the Lord. This is no coincidence.

Jesus called her Mother. A one of his last and greatest gifts to his beloved disciple and to the entire Church, he entrusted her, with these tender words in the Gospel of John: When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. (John 19:26, 27)

Mary was there at the Incarnation, Birth, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of God Incarnate. She was there throughout the often called hidden years in Nazareth. In the life of the Redeemer, every word and every act was redemptive, revealing the very life of God, the mystery of heaven touching earth, and the deeper purpose of our own lives. She was there in those moments whose impact is timeless. They are still as filled with the invitation of grace today as they were when they first occurred.

She was there on the great day of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, which we will soon celebrate. She was there as the first evangelizer and disciple who gave the first Christian testimony to her cousin, Elizabeth, and won the first convert in utero in the person of John the Baptist. This event, traditionally called The Visitation, is recorded in the Gospel of St. Luke (Luke l: 39-45).

This encounter immediately followed the visit of the Angel Gabriel to Mary (Luke 1:6-38) and is one of the fruits of her humble obedient response. That response was not a onetime reaction. It was the fruit of a life of surrendered love and stretched forward to characterize her whole life on this earth and her participation in the eternal communion of Saints.
Her Fiat ( Latin, let it be done) in response to the visitation from the messenger of heaven, the angel, provides a way to live for each one of us.

Mary said Yes to the invitation to love and she humbled herself. She confronted her own fears and she entered into a way of living. All of this in continued response to an original invitation of love, a gift, initiated by a loving God. Through this response, she assumed a lifestyle of receiving and giving, she became a fruitful woman, a God-bearer or Mother of God (which in Greek is Theo-tokos). She brought forth the Incarnate Word of God!  Her Yes, her humble surrender, reflects a trajectory of love and is a prototype of the vocation of every Christian to bear the fruit of surrendered love in their lives as well.

There is a way of life and love that all men and women are invited into – not just once, but daily. It is the path to authentic peace and the portal to the very mystery of life itself. It is what Christian Scripture calls the more excellent way, the way of love. Mary understood and walked this way with extraordinary humility. (1 Cor. 12:31) Mary, the mother of the Lord shows us the pattern of human love surrendered to God’s Love and finding its fulfillment. She also shows us the love of a mother made perfect in Jesus Christ.

Is it any wonder that the early Christians painted her image in the catacombs during their moments of fear, persecution and doubt? They found great inspiration from this woman of great faith. In her yes they came to understand that ordinary people can change human history. They were inspired to add their own yes, their own fiat to hers.

Justin Martyr and other early Christian apologists found in her obedient yes to the angel, the undoing of the no – I will not serve – which had been given by the first woman Eve. They gave Mary such titles as The Second Eve, the mother of a new creation. In her womb she carried the One whom Scripture calls the New Adam. He was born from her as the first born of a new race of men and women who would find a new birth through His Life, Death and Resurrection. In Him we are all made capable of giving our Yes to God. Through Grace we find the fullness of freedom that brings.

On this Mother’s Day I mourn the loss of my earthly mother Ellen and draw strength and hope in reflecting on Mary, the Mother of the Lord, my heavenly mother. I believe that hat the motherly love which my mother revealed so beautifully to me has now found its fulfillment. I know she is in the communion of love with the Mother of Jesus. I will offer a crown of roses to that dear mother by praying the prayer my mother taught me as soon as I could speak, the prayer we call the Rosary. Somehow, I know it will help to ease the sorrow and point me in the right direction, the triumph of love.

Numerous Tea Party chapters claim IRS attempts to sabotage nonprofit status

Fox News -Tea Party chapters around the nation are blasting the Internal Revenue Service after the federal agency sent them letters demanding information about their politics, contributors and even family members.

In letters sent from IRS offices in Cincinnati earlier this month, chapters including the Waco (Texas) Tea Party and the Ohio Liberty Council were asked to provide a list of donors, identify volunteers, financial support for and relationships with political candidates and parties, and even printed copies of their Facebook pages.

“Some of what they (the IRS) asked was reasonable, but there were some requests on there that were strange,” Toby Marie Walker, president of the Waco Tea Party told FoxNews.com. “It makes you wonder if they do this to groups like ACORN or other left-leaning groups.”

March for Life 2013: 1,600 people unite ‘voices for the voiceless’ at Candlelight Vigil

LifeSiteNews.com – At the close of an evening pro-life Mass at Ottawa’s St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish — packed to standing room only — an enthusiastic crowd marched to the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights Monument in downtown Ottawa for a Candlelight Vigil where 1,600 young and old honored the victims of abortion with prayer, songs, and speeches.

“Every single person here is put here by God. And every single person here has gifts from God. And every single one of you right now are using those gifts to be the voice for the voiceless,” said Alissa Golob of Campaign Life Coalition Youth, which organized the event.

Golob told the crowd of mostly young people not to be discouraged by Canada’s total lack of restrictions on abortion for all nine months of pregnancy, despite great efforts by the pro-life movement throughout the years.

“There’s only one thing that you have to remember when you feel really down and that is: we have truth on our side and we have God on our side and there is no way that we can fail with those two things.”

Vigil participants were joined by the 25 women who had just finished walking 200 kilometers from Montreal to Ottawa as a witness to life. Their journey was not only a protest against abortion, but to raise awareness that many women who abort their babies feel coerced into making that “choice.”

“I believe we are on the winning team. Truth always wins in the end. If we don’t quit, we win,” said Faytene Grasseschi, organizer of the Back to Life Walk. “If we will continue to do the right thing, there will come a time in this nation when not only is abortion illegal, but it is simply unthinkable.”

Headlines from Apollo: Senior Vatican Official condemns Mexican Death Saint as “Blasphemous”

BBC - The president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, said worshipping Santa Muerte was a “degeneration of religion”.

Cardinal Ravasi spoke at a series of events for believers and non-believers in Mexico City.

The cult, which reveres death, has been growing rapidly in Mexico.

It is represented by a cloaked female skeleton clutching a scythe.

It is particularly popular in areas of Mexico that have suffered from extreme violence carried out by the country’s drug cartels.

The cult is believed to date back to colonial times.

It merges indigenous beliefs with the tradition of venerating saints introduced by Christian missionaries after the Spanish conquest of Mexico.

Devotees pray to the saint at home-made altars and often offer votive candles, fruit and tequila in the hope Santa Muerte will grant their wishes.

Cardinal Ravasi said the practice was “anti-religious”. “Religion celebrates life, but here you have death,” he said.

“It’s not religion just because it’s dressed up like religion; it’s a blasphemy against religion”, he said.

The cardinal also referred to the fact that the cult is particularly popular among members of Mexico’s drug cartels and accused “criminals” of invoking it.

Why pre-order? The Sister’s have secured international distribution through the Decca Label which is owned by Universal Music Group. The reason to pre-order the album is because if the secular music label sees that there is a big demand for the album (i.e. sacred music), the label will invest more money into promoting and distributing the album.

Angels and Saints at Ephesus is the follow up to the chart topping Advent at Ephesus, the debut album that topped number one on the billboard charts.
