The Church considers marriage a Holy Sacrament and children a divine blessing from the moment of conception. It joyfully awaits them at the Baptismal font, recalling the words of Jesus, “Let the children come to me for of such is the kingdom of God.”

When we begin to understand the mystery of the Sacrament of Marriage and how it is a reflection of the marriage of Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5: 21-33), we can then begin to understand why contraception is intrinsically evil. In order to be in tune with God and His holy will, a married man and a married woman must have a profound, intimate and personal relationship with God. This relationship is fostered and deepened through a daily and well-disciplined life of prayer. Christian marriage is a call to learn the way of love; a vocation to follow Jesus Christ.

Fathers are the foundation of families, they give them identity and meaning in both life and in death. On this weekend when we stop the frenetic pace of life to honor and remember fathers, we have an opportunity to reflect on what really matters most in our lives. They are a gift to be received and we should thank them if they are still with us. If not, we should still thank them, honor them, remember them and learn all we can from the example of their lives.
