As of 8:00 p.m. Rome time on Thursday, February 28, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation became effective. I know there is a silver lining in all of this, but, just the same, I cannot ignore the sadness I feel.

American health care pioneer Mother Marianne Cope was canonized this past weekend. Mother Marianne, renowned for her work with Hansen’s disease, is one of only 10 Americans thus far to have achieved sainthood.

According to investigators, a search of the apartments of the pope’s former butler, Paolo Gabriele, revealed hundreds of official Vatican documents, and “more than a 1,000, both original and photocopies, were of interest.” Officer Silvano Carli testified that among them were original papers signed by Pope Benedict XVI, some of them stamped with an order for destruction.
