Barbara Willke, Godmother of Modern Pro-Life Movement, Passes Away

Stand with Truth -Barbara Willke, who was often considered the godmother of the modern-day pro-life movement, has passed away.

Willke, along with her husband Jack, a medical doctor, crisscrossed the nation in the 1960s and 1970s teaching people about the fight for life and helping set up some of the first state and local Right to Life groups combating abortion before and after the infamous Roe v. Wade decision.

With great sadness, Cincinnati Right to Life and pro-life advocates across the country are mourning her loss today. Willke served as co-founder along with her husband and as chairman of the organization for 28 years. She died peacefully Sunday night at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, after suffering a severe head injury due to a fall. Funeral arrangements are pending.

“Mrs. Willke was a woman of courage and intelligence whose lifelong commitment to preserving the sanctity of human life is a moving legacy,” said Paula Westwood, Executive Director Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati. “No one can fill her shoes.”

Barbara Willke was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and internationally known author, lecturer, and expert in human sexuality. She held B.S. and R.N. degrees from the University of Cincinnati, College of Nursing & Health, plus graduate studies at University of Dayton.

Mother of six, grandmother of 22, foster mother of several teenagers, Barbara headed the Department at the College of Nursing for five years before her full-time career as wife and mother.

Her husband, Dr. John Willke, is past president of National Right to Life, president, Life Issues Institute and president emeritus, International Right to Life Federation. They would have been married for 65 years this June.

With Dr. Willke, Barbara co-authored twelve books on human sexuality and abortion. Together they created audio and visual materials that were proven to be basic teaching tools throughout the world. Their materials have been translated into 30 languages on all five continents. She and Dr. Willlke frequently appeared on radio and TV shows. They have spoken in 64 different countries.

“Barbara was always a joy to be with, and the work she did in the movement helped lay the foundation for decades of life-saving activity,” said Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “We will miss her, but we will carry her spirit with us and build on her work!”

Mrs. Willke was awarded honorary doctorates from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and, along with Dr. Willke, Cincinnati’s Xavier University.

Congressman Henry Hyde’s words bring to mind Barbara Willke:

When the time comes, as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I’ve often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God — and a terror will rip your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there’ll be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world — and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, ‘Spare him, because he loved us!’

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – Little Riley was born with his heart on the wrong side of his body, disconnected valves and twisted bowels. Jade was assigned a bereavement midwife.

After more than a year of medics battling to save their baby, the 17-month-old boy has finally left hospital for good to live with Jade and dad Rikki for the first time.

“Doctors told me time and time again that Riley would have no chance, and I should consider an abortion,” the 22-year-old mom from Barnsley, Yorkshire said.

“But he’s an angel sent from above. He’s my first child and I just felt I wanted to keep him.”

Jade and Riley’s 25-year-old dad were told repeatedly by doctors that Riley “had no chance.”

However — the problems they forecast did not materialize. Riley was kept in the hospital for several weeks after his birth in September of 2011 and had to be returned there in December of the same year, where he has stayed until being allowed this week.

Riley still has a number of health problems and his airways are kept clear with a tracheotomy attached to a ventilator, which he had to use the entire time.

One of his kidneys has also not properly formed and is inside his abdomen, and must be checked every two weeks because it can stop and start working at any time.

Jade said she it was heartbreaking watching her friends with their own children, knowing that Riley was still in hospital. Both her and her husband take care of Riley full time, and are even looking forward to spending more time with their little boy.

Doctors have said that Riley might never walk. Jade said they constantly have to keep an eye on him as he can crawl and tries to stand up.

“He’s such a happy chappy. He loves Tigger from Winnie the Pooh and is always bouncing about,” she says.

“He needs watching constantly as sometimes he tries to pull out his tubes. It’s challenging but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I look past the tracheotomy now; I don’t see it any more. If it wasn’t there, you would never know.”

FRONT ROYAL, VA (Catholic Online) – The 40 year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision Roe v. Wade brings us to a biblical number fraught with symbolic importance. Psalm 95 laments: “Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and I said, ‘It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways.’”

Those laboring in the “pro-life vineyard” may certainly be justified in looking on these past years as a time of wandering in the desert with relatively few tangible results. But the remarkable achievements of literally thousands of pro-life counseling centers that have saved so many lives from abortion must be acknowledged. It remains true, however, that progress towards making abortion not only illegal but unthinkable remains painfully slow.

We can also see these four decades as a period of purification and preparation. It is up to us now to conquer the promised land of a civilization that is rooted in love and respect for all our brothers and sisters. Today selfishness and the convenience of the stronger are enshrined as “rights.”

The deadliest poison of the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling was the finding of a constitutional “right to privacy” identified with virtually abortion-on-demand. We should remember, however, that the stepping stone for Roe’s “right to privacy” in U.S. constitutional law was the Griswold v. Connecticut Supreme Court decision of 1965 that invoked this same “right” to invalidate a state law banning birth control. It serves to confirm Blessed John Paul II’s insight that contraception and abortion are “fruits of the same tree.”

Up until Roe v. Wade, countries as varied as Nazi Germany, communist Russia and democratic Britain agreed on one thing at least when they legalized killing in the womb: They saw abortion as an evil to be tolerated in certain circumstances or to be inflicted on enemies. The general legislative pattern was depenalization, in other words, abortion remains a crime but is not punished by legal sanctions if performed under certain specific circumstances or conditions. Of course, many countries simply ban the practice of abortion. Among the others who permit it, the most common limitations remain a 12th week of pregnancy time limit for abortions and the obligation for the mother to receive pre-abortion counseling with the stated objective of providing alternatives to and reasons not to have an abortion.

U.S.-style “abortion as a constitutional right” was revolutionary. Radical feminists, Planned Parenthood and their minions realized this notion was a goldmine. The terminology of the “right to privacy” was tweaked by academics into the “right” to “reproductive health” or simply “reproductive rights.”

The 1994 United Nations International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo produced a Programme of Action which was the first inter-governmental negotiated document to use these terms. In fact, the Clinton administration and others had made no secret of their plans to use the Cairo ICPD to proclaim an “international right to abortion.” Fortunately, John Paul II and a coalition of pro-life nations and organizations thwarted this attempt at a Roe v. Wade for the world. Nevertheless, the battle to impose a “right” to abortion globally was on.

Taking their cue from the U.S. experience, feminist lawyers created The Center for Reproductive Rights whose mission is to use “the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill.” They have so far involved themselves in lawsuits and other legal actions in 50 countries. Declaring never before recognized “rights” and coercing others into implementing and footing the bill for them is a favorite liberal tactic.

The U.S. Constitution nowhere includes the phrase “right to privacy.” The U.S. Supreme Court’s formulation of the discovery of a constitutional “right to privacy” simply takes one’s breath away. “The foregoing cases suggest that specific guarantees in the Bill of Rights have penumbras formed by emanations from those guarantees that help give them life and substance.” A penumbra is the lighter part of a shadow, and this argument is embarrassingly intellectually lightweight as even many pro-abortion academics reluctantly admit.

Similarly, no international reproductive right to abortion has been recognized, but that has not deterred the apostles of abortion. They take comfort in the fact that Roe v. Wade has yet to be reversed and thrown onto the ash-heap of history. Rather it is treated as something of a “sacred cow” of American jurisprudence. Witness the reverential tone with which liberal senators refer to the “right to privacy” in Supreme Court justice confirmation hearings.

As hundreds of thousands of pro-life protestors join the March for Life in Washington, D.C. this year we should remember that getting rid of Roe v. Wade is an urgent need for the world and not just the United States. The “right to abortion” must be buried as definitively as the “right to own slaves” and other similar legal travesties.

The unnamed source told the Chicago Sun-Times on Sunday that “Justin just is very uncomfortable about political issues — especially ones like abortion that are very divisive. He’s all about entertaining his fans with his music and not interested in pushing a political agenda.”

MariaNews.com – With just days before the 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, pro-lifers across the country are gearing up for one of the largest gatherings in respect life history – the March for Life.

Over the years the March for Life has become an opportunity for prayer, pilgrimage, penance and hope. Folks from around the world come to participate in this amazing but sad occasion. Each year, hundreds of thousands march for life to protest Roe v. Wade. This year marks the 40th year with over 55 million abortions in the United States since 1973.

The March for Life founder Nellie Gray (who passed away in August of 2012) talked to me on several occasions about how she believed we could convert even the hardest of hearts. Specifically I recall several conversations when she mentioned that she was praying for the conversion of President Barack Obama. She would say something like “imagine if he were on our side, imagine if he had a conversion and became pro-life. He would be one of our greatest advocates. People listen to him, he could help us convert others. I am going to pray for him.” Nellie firmly believed in the power of prayer and conversion. She believed that all people were capable of seeing the truth.

One organization BlackStone Films has created an amazing video using President Obama’s Sandy Hook Speech. This video is not meant to take away from the senseless tragedy that occurred in Newtown, NJ, rather the video materializes the images that so many pro-lifers felt when hearing Obama’s speech for the first time. We in the pro-life movement mourn for those who were lost at Sandy Hook, and we also mourn each day for the nearly 5000 babies who are lost to abortion. We pray for the healing of all hearts which have been damaged by the evils of false choice.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – Texas Governor Rick Perry says a new law will provide health care for low-income women while respecting the state’s values. Planned Parenthood has headed to the state court this week.

A Texas judge denied the group’s request for a temporary restraining order that would have extended the organization’s ability to participate in late December.

Such establishments in Texas previously obtained 90 percent of their money through the Social Security Administration along with other federal funding.

Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions at some of its clinics, and fellow plaintiff Marcela Balquinta of McAllen, Texas, filed the request for a temporary restraining order seeking exclusion from the new law. They argue that the organization provides preventative women’s health care not associated with abortions to nearly 50,000 Texas enrollees annually.

“I have denied the request for a temporary restraining order at this time,” Judge Gary Harger said in late December. “I did not find that there would be an irreparable harm in waiting nine days for the injunction hearing.”

Governor Rick Perry issued a statement in late December at the time welcoming the move.

The “ruling finally clears the way for thousands of low-income Texas women to access much-needed care, while at the same time respecting the values and laws of our state,” he said. “I applaud all those who stand ready to help these women live healthy lives without sending taxpayer money to abortion providers and their affiliates.”

Planned Parenthood here is not going down without a fight. “It is shocking that once again Texas officials are letting politics jeopardize health care access for women,” Ken S. Lambrecht, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas said at the time. “This case isn’t about Planned Parenthood — it’s about women like Marcy Balquinta who rely on us for basic, preventive health care.”

MariaNews.com – “40th March for Life crowds could top Obama Inauguration” – was the headline yesterday in an article published by the Washington Examiner. The article was picked up a short time later (and is still being featured on the home page) of the DrudgeReport.com, “March for Life crowds snap up DC hotel rooms; Could top inauguration..,” read the headline.

The biggest crowds ever for the annual March for Life protest are expected to hit Washington January 25 as hundreds of thousands attend the 40th anniversary rally to protest the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, according to organizers.

The march, expected to attract tens of thousands more than the record 400,000 two years ago, could rival President Obama’s Inauguration Day crowd, propelled by the growing youth support of efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade, which the president has embraced with open arms. Obama drew 1.8 million in 2009. Just 600,000 are expected January 21st.

The March for Life began 40 years ago as a peaceful demonstration against Roe v. Wade. Since 1973 thousands of people have gathered in the streets of the Capitol to march for the defense and respect of human life. The March for Life has received very little attention from the media in years past. Headlines from the mainstream press have historically shunned what is one of the largest protests in the Nation.

In 2011 CNN reported that “thousands rally against abortion on Capitol Hill” – that was close, but “tens of thousands” would have been more accurate. In 2011 it is estimated that over 400,000 people marched-for-life. This year estimates are projecting attendees to the March for Life could exceed 500,000. Only 600,000 are expected to attend the Presidential inauguration (down from nearly 1.8 million in 2008).

This years March for Life is different than the rest. This year we March knowing that 40 years have gone by and over 55 million babies have been aborted in the US since 1973. This year we also mourn the loss of the March for Life founder Nellie Gray. Nellie passed away last August. She dreamed of unifying the pro-life movement, of converting pro-choice advocates (like President Obama) and she believed we could end abortion. Her dream lives on and Nellie will continue to inspire the pro-life movement for years to come.

Jeanne Monahan is the new President of the March for Life. Jeanne has picked up the reigns and is marching forward as she leads efforts to organize this years March for Life.

The March for Life has launched a new website which will allow marchers to stay connected all year. The site will feature cutting edge technology which hopes to provide recourses and tools to the pro-life movement.

This year the March for Life is also co-sponsoring a pro-life 5k with the National LIFE Runners. LIFE Runners co-founder Pat Castle was working with Nellie Gray to bring the event to life. Folks can register for the 5k here.

The March for Life is also co-sponsoring the Law of Life Summit “3” with Ave Maria School of Law. This is a gathering of national pro-life leaders and students dedicated to creating measurable and achievable objectives for overturning Roe v. Wade. Space is limited but folks can register here.
