The Supreme Court Justices ruled that the election law that excluded members from the old regime was unconstitutional. Fresh elections could take place in two months. A Catholic Church spokesman says that Egypt now has an opportunity for real elections, free from Islamist parties’ vote rigging. However, fears of a military coup persist.

The election results confirmed the fears of Egyptian Christians, many of whom believe that Islamists will take control of the country in the wake of the revolution that deposed former President Hosni Mubarak. Salafi religious leaders have made numerous statements emphasizing Christian’s second-citizen status in Egypt.Several mass attacks against Christians in Upper Egypt happened this year after Salafi sheiks prompted attacks during Friday prayers.
