How can a famous man who had everything to lose by becoming a Christian do so and find peace for his soul in the Church? St. Augustine can show you. If ever there was an ancient story that is relevant to our contemporary culture, “Restless Heart” is it. No Catholic family is without its wayward sons and daughters, whose restless hearts have led them from the Faith of their parents into the spiritual desert of modern society, which is no less debauched than Rome in its final days.

If there is any message which can be drawn from St. Augustine’s life, and there are many, it is the message of repentance and conversion. This is a message the world desperately needs to hear today. It is one of heartfelt dedication to Christ as Master, Teacher and Savior, which cultivates and nourishes change; it is one of sincere commitment to love in freedom and obedience; it is one of abandonment in trust and ardent devotion to the Other: the source and origin of our being and life.In his book, Confessions, we read of the re-creative and regenerative effects of true and sincere repentance, which, by God’s grace, sets a man upon a wholly new journey of life.

The Lord Jesus is greater than the Baptist, who says he is not fit to even undo the Lord’s sandal-strap. Even though the Baptist ‘was not the light’, he was called from the very depths of his heart to ‘bear witness to the light’ and so became the most excellent witness ever sent to prepare the way of the Lord.
