Gay youths to be allowed to join Boy Scouts: Controversy rages

By Catholic Online

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – More than 60 percent of the group’s 1,400-member national council voted at an annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas, for the change this week. The new guidelines will take effect at the start of the New Year.

“No youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone,” says the resolution.

“The resolution also reinforces that Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether heterosexual or homosexual, by youth of scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting,” the 103-year-old organization said in a statement after the vote.

The vote came after “an extensive dialogue within the scouting family (that) was exhaustive and . very respectful,” BSA President Wayne Perry said.

“No matter how you feel about this issue, kids are better off in scouting,” Perry told reporters. “Our mission is to serve every kid.”

The decision brought quick reaction from special interest groups. The Human Rights Campaign said the BSA took a “historic step forward,” but also added that “Unfortunately, the new policy does not go far enough, leaving adult Eagle Scouts, scout leaders, and parents behind.”

Jennifer Tyrrell, an Ohio mother who was ousted as a den leader in April 2012 due to her lesbianism, called hailed the vote as “incredible . They’ve never been raised to discriminate against anyone regardless of sex or color or anything, so they can’t understand why people care so much,” she said of her children. “Definitely, one day, I hope they look back and think that we’re part of something amazing.”

She says the decision has galvanized her to change Boy Scout policy so that gays and lesbian adults, like her, can serve as leaders.

“When we used to exclude women from things, when we used to exclude black people from things, and that never has ever worked, but we continue to do it,” she said. “I’m going to be around to make sure that that’s not the case. We’re definitely not going to go away.”

Conservative groups along with some religious organizations argued against making any change in the membership policy, saying it would dilute the Boy Scout message of morality and potentially destroy the organization. John Stemberger, founder of OnMyHonor.net, which opposed the resolution, called the vote a “sad day for Scouting.”

I was very dissatisfied with this answer because there is a lot more that needs to be said about the relationship of husband and wife in eternity. To me, it is unthinkable that the love that husband and wife have for each other on earth will be diminished or their unity disrupted in heaven. We may not call their relationship in heaven a marriage, but I believe that their love and unity is eternal if they remain faithful to each other while on earth.

At the beginning of her illness, my wife, Maud, who is now in a long-term care facility, would often ask me, “Are we going to be together in heaven?” I would always say, “Yes, we will be.”, because in the liturgy for the Vigil for the Deceased it says, ‘We believe that all the ties of friendship and affection which knit us as one throughout our lives do not unravel with death’. Then in a prayer addressed to the Lord our God it says, “But for those who believe in your love, death is not the end, nor does it destroy the bonds that you forge in our lives.” From these two examples from these prayers it seems clear to me that the love between husband and wife, which has God as its origin, is eternal and that husband and wife will be united forever.

St. John Chrysostom who lived in the fourth century would tell young married couples, “Be united in this life so that you will not be separated in the life that has been promised.”

The unity of husband and wife on earth is based on the complementarity of gender and ordered for the procreation of children. This will not be the case in heaven, for Jesus said, “At the resurrection they neither marry or are given in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven” (Matthew 22: 30). This, however, does not preclude the love and unity of husband and wife in heaven because nuptial love will be transformed into angelic-like love, that is, spiritual love.

St. Thomas Aquinas said that love of neighbor would be made perfect only in heaven. Since for married persons, their nearest neighbor is their spouse, this means that their love for each other will be perfected in heaven. It then follows that their love and unity in heaven will be far more perfect than it ever could have been on earth.

The more perfect love and unity between husband and wife in heaven is the result of their being purified of all sin and its consequences. This in turn allows them to abide more fully in God and God in them. Abiding in God is the key to unity. Jesus essentially said this in his Last Supper discourse when he prayed for those who would come to believe in him saying, “That they may all be one, as you Father are in me and I am in you, that they also may be one in us…” (John 17:21)

The difference between the love and unity of husband and wife on earth and that in heaven is that on earth spousal love and unity are exclusive. In heaven, on the other hand, husband and wife together and individually will include all others in their sphere of spiritual love. We will all be united to each other as Bride of Christ in his Mystical Body.

Fellow married couples, let us look forward to our heavenly future with joy, because what God has joined together no human being must separate (Mark 10: 9) and neither will God. With the “love that never fails” (1 Corinthians 13: 8), we will be more closely united with our beloved spouse in heaven and with Christ than we have been on earth.

Judge temporarily blocks California gay conversion therapy law

FoxNews.com - A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked California from enforcing a first-of-its-kind law that bars licensed psychotherapists from working to change the sexual orientations of gay minors, but he limited the scope of his order to just the three providers who have appealed to him to overturn the measure.

U.S. District Court Judge William Shubb made a decision just hours after a hearing on the issue, ruling that the First Amendment rights of psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals who engage in “reparative” or “conversion” therapy outweigh concern that the practice poses a danger to young people.

“Even if SB 1172 is characterized as primarily aimed at regulating conduct, it also extends to forms of (conversion therapy) that utilize speech and, at a minimum, regulates conduct that has an incidental effect on speech,” Shubb wrote.

Waving banners with slogans such as “don’t touch civil marriage,” “all born from the union of a man and a woman” and “one father + one mother for all children,” demonstrators were highly visible in the cities of Paris, Lyon, Marseille and other major towns.

The organizers said 200,000 people demonstrated in the Paris, compared to a police estimate of 70,000.

France’s National Assembly is due to start examining the proposed law allowing same-sex marriage this coming January. A vote is expected in mid-2013. The proposal would grant gay couples the right to adopt children — but not to use assisted procreation methods.

Recent polls show the majority of French people support gay marriage, while still many don’t favor the right for homosexual couples to adopt.
Pope Benedict told French bishops visiting the Vatican on Saturday not to be “afraid” of spreading Christian teachings.

“In the important debates about society, the voice of the church must make itself heard relentlessly and with determination,” he said.

The Vatican pledged earlier this month to never stop fighting attempts to “erase” the privileged role of heterosexual marriage, which it called “an achievement of civilization.”

Among the protestors was Lyon Cardinal Philippe Barbarin. He says that marriage was defined at the very start of the Bible as created by God to join man and woman.

“I’m here like everyone else, like the Protestants, the Catholics, the Muslims, the philosophers, it’s a message to politicians so that a debate is organized on such a fundamental issue,” he said, adding that he had come as a “simple citizen.”

Gay conversion therapy banned in state of California

By Catholic Online

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – Doctors will now be barred from performing the so-called therapy which experts say can cause psychological harm to youngsters, including driving them to having suicidal thoughts.

“This bill bans non-scientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,” Brown added.

Under the law, doctors cannot provide therapy that seeks “to change behaviors or gender expressions, or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.” The law will come into force on January 1.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender (LGBT) rights groups were quick to praise the governor.

“Thank you @JerryBrownGov for signing #SB1172 into law and protecting #LGBT youth from psychological abuse!” tweeted The Trevor Project, which provides suicide prevention services to the LGBT community.

“LGBT youth will now be protected from a practice that has not only been debunked as junk science, but has been proven to have drastically negative effects on their well-being” said its head, Chad Griffin.

“We commend Gov. Brown for putting children first, and call on all states to take California’s lead on this issue,” he added.

Adding to this trend, Exodus International, the famous anti-homosexual ministry has announced that it will no longer practice conversion therapy.

Exodus International President Alan Chambers addressed the crowd at the 37th annual Freedom Conference recently shared why the organization will no longer use reparative therapy to help those who struggle with same-sex attraction, and will use a model that focuses more on discipleship instead.

Chambers told The Christian Post that reparative therapy, which seeks to “cure” SSA through activities like counseling and prayer, sets the person seeking therapy up for failure by giving him or her unrealistic expectations.

“As the president of Exodus International and, even more than that, as a Christian leader who is out in front of people all the time, it is my responsibility to lead honestly and transparently and to share with people that, just because you become a Christian,…your struggles don’t always go away,” he said. “You don’t get to a place where you’re never going to be tempted again.”

Chambers says anyone who still believes in reparative therapy will still be able to minister with Exodus, but the organization will no longer support such practice.

Gay Marriage Bill Rejected by Australian Parliament

BBC - Australian members of parliament have overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would have legalised gay marriages after days of heated debate.

The House of Representatives voted 98 to 42 against the bill, with one MP resigning a key post after making controversial comments against it.

Australia does not permit gay marriage, though some states allow civil unions.

Gay rights activists called the decision a “slap on the face,” ABC News reported.

The majority Labor MPs were allowed to vote on the bill based on their beliefs rather than on party lines, while the opposition voted against it.

Both Prime Minister Julia Gillard and opposition leader Tony Abbot voted against the bill.

Labor MP Anthony Albanese, who voted for the bill, remained optimistic despite its defeat.

“I think at some future time our parliament will catch up with community opinion, just as it has on other issues,” he said.

Guest Opinion: Guidance for the Informed Catholic Voter and A Look at the Party Platforms

By Dr. Frederick Liewehr

RICHMOND, VA. (Catholic Online) – “The best defense of democracy is an informed electorate.” “Voting is the least arduous of a citizen’s duties. He has the prior and harder duty of making up his mind.” These quotations, attributed to Thomas Jefferson and Ralph Barton Perry respectively, imply that if we are to have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, then that people must do its share by becoming conversant with the issues, the candidates, and their platforms before every election. Only if the voters are informed – and truly understand the gravity of their responsibility to participate in the direction that their country takes – can we become a responsible people and nation.

In the 21st Century, like it or not, we face a government that now spends over 25% of our GDP, the highest at any time in history except for WWII. Additionally, Federal regulatory agencies are involved in all facets of life, so that you cannot even use a shower, the toilet, or now even a light bulb without feeling the weight of Federal control. When the government has become that pervasive, citizens must assume responsibility, while they still can, for its direction. Thus, it is imperative that voters understand what the candidates for office consider to be the role of government, and how they propose to bring that vision to reality.

During the 2008 Presidential election, we heard a lot about “change”, but few understood what exactly was going to be changed, or how. We were asked, with the so-called “health care” legislation, to approve a huge document with ramifications for one sixth of our economy without reading it; in the infamous words of Nancy Pelosi, “we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it – away from the fog of the controversy.” This is hardly what Jefferson had in mind.

The Democratic Party Platform makes it very clear. “This election is not simply a choice between two candidates or two political parties, but between two fundamentally different paths for our country and our families.” That is an understatement, and highlights why it is so critical that we pay especially close attention to the parties’ platforms in this election.

There is no doubt that America has seen “change” over the past fifty years, particularly on the social front. “Conservatives”, usually Republicans, seek to minimize these changes, and generally think that the traditional interpretation of the Constitution, what it says, it means, is correct. “Progressives”, usually Democrats, believe in a “living Constitution” where what it says is up to a judge, a court, or even popular opinion to determine. These two groups have had increasingly divergent views on social issues, and the voter must decide on which side he or she resides, to stand up and be counted. This is not optional. Ayn Rand, though understandably controversial for many of her positions, correctly observed that man “has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice.”

But how do we choose? Like the fruit in the Garden, so many things “seem” good. In what has been labeled the “culture war” the only guidance that matters comes from Christ’s Church. We have all seen what happens when secular humanism and the hope of creating heaven on earth collide with the realities of Original Sin and disobedience to God’s commands. The paramount rule for any citizen must be “Refuse the evil, and choose the good. [Isaiah 7:15]” No matter how appealing the proposal may be, the ends never justify the means. The most elementary form of this commandment regards the sanctity of life, without which nothing else we do can be sanctified. Again, God puts this very simply: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: Therefore choose life. [Deuteronomy 30:19]”

The easiest way the prospective voter has to evaluate the plans of the two parties and their candidates is to examine the party platforms. Obviously each candidate is an individual in hisor her own right, and cannot expect to support the party platform at all times and in all ways, but the platforms are constructed so as to convey at least in generalities how the candidates will govern. Additionally, the candidates are constrained by existing law, so, for example a Republican candidate may not feel they can say say that heor she will immediately put an end to abortion because it is already enshrined in law by the Supreme Court.

He can, however, indicate whether or not he supports reduction or expansion of that law within his powers. Naturally, you cannot expect someone who intends to, say, deprive you of your civil liberties to tell you that is his intention. You must read the “code language” and consider his previous record, and realize that he may simply not mention it if he considers it too problematical for too many people. Better to let them find out after the election.

With that in mind, I would encourage you to read the entire platform of each party before you vote. The Republican Platform can be found here and the Democratic Party Platform can be found here Consider carefully what the party has done in the past and what it says it will do in the future. You should also read the US catholic Bishops’ “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship“ the EWTN guide and Catholic Answers’ “Voters Guide for Serious Catholics”

In the Catholic Answers’ guide are listed five non-negotiable, intrinsically evil actions that must never be promoted by the law. Regrettably some are already enshrined in law in this country, so these must be reversed and countered, not supported, by any prospective candidate. To that end, I will briefly digest the statements contained in the two platforms concerning those actions to help you begin your research. In a few places I have added explanatory comments. You may research other issues, such as religious freedom, for yourselves.

1. Abortion

Democrat Party Platform: “. in his first month in office, President Obama overturned the’global gag rule’, a ban on federal funds to foreign family planning organizations that provided information about, counseling on, or offered abortions. And that is why the administration has supported lifesaving family planning health information and services.” (The “health information and services” are generally provided by Planned Parenthood). “The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay.”

Republican Party Platform: “We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.”

2. Euthanasia

Democratic Party Platform: Not mentioned

Republican Party Platform: “We oppose the non-consensual withholding or withdrawal of care or treatment, including food and water, from people with disabilities, including newborns, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose active and passive euthanasia and assisted suicide. ” “Republican leadership has led the effort to prohibit the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion.” “We urge Congress to strengthen the Born Alive Infant Protection Act by enacting appropriate civil and criminal penalties on healthcare providers who fail to provide treatment and care to an infant who survives an abortion.” “We call for legislation to ban sex-selective abortions. and to protect from abortion unborn children who are capable of feeling pain” .

3. Embryonic stem cell research

Democratic Party Platform: “Further, the President issued an executive order repealing the restrictions on embryonic stem cell research.”

Republican Party Platform: “We call for a ban on the use of body parts from aborted fetuses for research. We support and applaud adult stem cell research to develop lifesaving therapies, and we oppose the killing of embryos for their stem cells. We oppose federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.”

4. Human cloning

Democratic Party Platform: Not mentioned

Republican Party Platform: “We urge a ban on human cloning and on the creation of or experimentation on human embryos.”

5. Homosexual practice and homosexual “marriage”

Democratic Party Platform: “This administration hosted the first-ever White House Conference on Bullying Prevention and we must continue our work to prevent vicious bullying of young people and support LGBT youth.” (Many see “prevention of bullying” as code words for promoting homosexual practice among young people) ” Democrats support evidence-based and age-appropriate sex education.” “The President’s record . ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’.” . “The Administration has said that the word ‘family’ in immigration includes LGBT relationships.” “Recognizing that gay rights are human rights. the State Department is funding a program that finances gay rights organizations to combat discrimination, violence, and other abuses.” “We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples.”

Republican Party Platform: “A serious threat to our country’s constitutional order, perhaps even more dangerous than presidential malfeasance, is an activist judiciary, in which some judges usurp the powers reserved to other branches of government. A blatant example has been the court-ordered redefinition of marriage in several States. That is why Congressional Republicans took the lead in enacting the Defense of Marriage Act, affirming the right of States and the federal government not to recognize same-sex relationships licensed in other jurisdictions.

The current Administration’s open defiance of this constitutional principle-in its handling of immigration cases, in federal personnel benefits, in allowing a “same-sex marriage” at a military base, and in refusing to defend DOMA (The Defense of Marriage Act) in the courts-makes a mockery of the President’s inaugural oath.” “We reaffirm our support for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.” “With a Republican Administration, the (Justice) Department will fulfill its responsibility to defend all federal laws in court, including the Defense of Marriage Act.” “We support the First Amendment right of freedom of association of the Boy Scouts of America and other service organizations whose values are under assault and condemn the State blacklisting of religious groups which decline to arrange adoptions by same-sex couples.” ” The effectiveness of our foreign aid has been limited by the cultural agenda of the current Administration, attempting to impose on foreign countries, especially the peoples of Africa, legalized abortion and the homosexual rights agenda.”

6. Contraception (addition to the original list)

Democratic Party Platform: “As a result of our efforts, today. People with private insurance are getting . FDA-approved contraception with no out-of-pocket costs.” “And that’s why the Affordable Care Act is ending health insurance discrimination against women, and provides women with free access to . contraception.”" The Affordable Care Act ensures that
women have access to contraception in their health insurance plans.”

Republican Party Platform: “We oppose school-based clinics that provide referrals, counseling, and related services for abortion and contraception.” “The most offensive instance of this war on religion has been the current Administration’s attempt to compel faith-related institutions, as well as believing individuals, to contravene their deeply held religious, moral, or ethical beliefs regarding health services, traditional marriage, or abortion.”

So there you have it. As the Bishops say, “Catholic teaching challenges voters and candidates, citizens and elected officials, to consider the moral and ethical dimensions of public policy issues.” As Bishop Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin, reminded us recently, “A Catholic conscience can never take exception to the prohibition of actions which are intrinsically evil.” Never has the choice been clearer than in this election. Please consider the platforms prayerfully, and vote as your conscience, “the voice of God resounding in your heart”, directs you.

By Deacon Antonio Sandoval

My wife, Maud, and I attended a Marriage Encounter weekend in 1972. The weekend was presented by three couples and a priest. The couples shared their experiences of growing closer as a couple through the daily practice of dialogue, communicating not only their thoughts, but also their feelings. The priest spoke about growing closer to his parishioners in a similar way. Maud and I were so joyfully excited with the weekend that we decided Marriage Encounter was an organization we could support financially. But when we communicated our intention to one of the presenting team couples, they told us that they had something better for us. At the end of the weekend they invited us to attend a Team Training weekend so we could become a presenting couple.

This began a five-year ministry which we enjoyed very much. Marriage Encounter had a religious dimension. It taught that your relationship with your spouse runs parallel with your relationship with God. To have a good relationship with your spouse both of you needed to have a good relationship with God.

Marriage Encounter was advertised as a weekend experience designed to make good marriages better. So after being a team couple in Marriage Encounter for 5 years, Maud and I decided to help couples who were having serious problems in their marriages. We met with them couple to couple. Although couples’ problems were different, they had one thing in common: These couples seldom prayed, and they almost never prayed together as a couple.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux said in one of his sermons (early 12th century), “Love is a great thing so long as it returns continually to its fountainhead, flows back to its source, always drawing from there the water which constantly replenishes it.” (Second reading from the Divine Office, August 20, Memorial of St. Bernard) That “fountainhead” is the God who is Love and the source of all love.

In our time, in the 1950s, Father Patrick Peyton, the Rosary Priest, said something similar, “The Family that prays together stays together”. And Bishop Fulton Sheen said that it takes three to make a marriage, the couple and God.

The next thing that fully convinced me that prayer makes long-lasting marriages possible were two sociological studies of couples who daily prayed together, read Scripture together, and went to Church on Sundays. These couples had a divorce rate of 0.2% compared to 50% for the general population. Just to make sure that my facts were up to date, at this writing, I searched the web for, “divorce rate for couples who pray together” and found a number of reports with results similar to what I have reported above.

There is another group of couples whose divorce rate is around 1% or less; these are couples who use Natural Family Planning when there is a good reason for postponing a pregnancy. This requires abstinence during periods of fertility. The couple must have the moral fortitude to practice self-denial, but the rewards are worth it. It is a healthy alternative to artificial contraception which has numerous harmful side effects. See www.familyplanning.net for information on Natural Family Planning and the harmful effects of artificial contraception.

Marriage is a God given privilege that allows us to participate in God’s plan for humanity. “Marriage is more than your love for each other. It has a higher dignity and power, for it is God’s holy ordinance, through which he wills to perpetuate the human race until the end of time. In your love you see only your two selves in the world, but in marriage you are a link in the chain of generations, which God causes to come and to pass away to his glory, and calls to his kingdom.” (Quotes of Dietrich Bonhoeffer about marriage)

Let us pray for healthy marriages because the families they form are the building blocks for a healthy society and a vigorous Church.

Antonio is a retired deacon in the Archdiocese of Denver. Last September his wife, Maud, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer. They were told that she didn’t have long to live. Since she is 83 years old, they decided to refuse the chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Last October they were sent to Hospice. They have now been there for 8 months. Antonio’s wife is not experiencing the symptoms of multiple myeloma other than the fact that she cannot move and has to stay in bed all the time. She is also in the last stages of Alzheimer’s disease. You prayers will be appreciated. Antonio spends the entire day with his wife.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien Calls Scotland to Defend the Truth about Marriage

By Catholic Online

Catholic Online (http://www.catholic.org)

Do not misunderstand the teaching of the Catholic Church concerning the true nature of marriage and the family and society founded upon it. This is objective truth, revealed in the Natural Law and thus knowable and binding on all men and women in every Nation. We must resist the lies and the lure of those who seek to keep us behind our Church doors in our defense of this truth. Yes, the Church, through Scripture and Tradition, opens up the depth of this truth concerning the nature and ends of marriage for those who believe. However, the objective nature of marriage is not simply a matter of our “religious position” as Christians.

GLASKOW, Scotland, UK (Catholic Online) – Keith Patrick Cardinal O’Brien is one of many heroic Catholic Bishops who have taken their place on the front line of the battle of our age to defend true marriage and the family and society founded upon it. When the history is written of this monumental struggle for the soul of western civilization, he will be included in the ranks of a growing number of courageous Catholic Church leaders who took their stand and would not be moved.

Make no mistake, this is a battle. St. Paul reminded the early Christians in Ephesus, “our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God – that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground.” (Eph. 6:12, 13)

We are facing an intense spiritual war against the very idea of the existence of objective truths in a contemporary age which has been besieged by the false propaganda of what Pope Benedict XVI properly called a “Dictatorship of Relativism.” Relativism is an ideology which maintains the there are no truths upon which to ground and inform daily life. That “your truth” is equal to “my truth” – in short, there is not truth. We serve Jesus Christ, the One who proclaims to the world waiting to be born, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. (John 14:6)

We who are baptized into Christ now live our lives as members of His Body, which St. Paul reminded his disciple Timothy, is “the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.” The truths which this Church proclaims and defends in the social order, such as the truth about marriage and the family and society founded upon it, are revealed in the Natural Law. They are the very foundation for every truly human and just social order. They are not simply “religious matters” to be kept to oursleves, locked up, figuratively or literally, behind our Church doors.

To be able to stand and fight in this battle, It will also help to remember these words which the Apostle addressed to the Christians in Ephesus, “stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one.And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit”.(Eph 6: 14-19a)

In a March 3, 2012 editorial opinion in the secular newspaper the London Telegraph entitled “We cannot afford to indulge this madness“, Cardinal O’Brien spoke boldly to the broader society of the United kingdom concerning the effort to – by secular fiat- compel a moral and legal equivalency be given between homosexual partnerships and truth marriage:

“The Government is this month launching a consultation on same-sex marriage, asking the public whether it should be introduced in England and Wales. I hope many respond and consider signing the petition in support of traditional marriage organised by a new organization, the Coalition for Marriage. On the surface, the question of same-sex marriage may seem to be an innocuous one. Civil partnerships have been in place for several years now, allowing same-sex couples to register their relationship and enjoy a variety of legal protections.

“When these arrangements were introduced, supporters were at pains to point out that they didn’t want marriage, accepting that marriage had only ever meant the legal union of a man and a woman. Those of us, who were not in favor of civil partnership, believing that such relationships are harmful to the physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing of those involved, warned that in time marriage would be demanded too. We were accused of scaremongering then, yet exactly such demands are upon us now.

“Since all the legal rights of marriage are already available to homosexual couples, it is clear that this proposal is not about rights, but rather is an attempt to redefine marriage for the whole of society at the behest of a small minority of activists. Redefining marriage will have huge implications for what is taught in our schools, and for wider society. It will redefine society since the institution of marriage is one of the fundamental building blocks of society. The repercussions of enacting same-sex marriage into law will be immense.

“But can we simply redefine terms at a whim? Can a word whose meaning has been clearly understood in every society throughout history suddenly be changed to mean something else? If same-sex marriage is enacted into law what will happen to the teacher who wants to tell pupils that marriage can only mean – and has only ever meant – the union of a man and a woman?

“Will that teacher’s right to hold and teach this view be respected or will it be removed? Will both teacher and pupils simply become the next victims of the tyranny of tolerance, heretics, whose dissent from state-imposed orthodoxy must be crushed at all costs?

“In Article 16 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, marriage is defined as a relationship between men and women. But when our politicians suggest jettisoning the established understanding of marriage and subverting its meaning they aren’t derided. Instead, their attempt to redefine reality is given a polite hearing, their madness is indulged. Their proposal represents a grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right.

“As an institution, marriage long predates the existence of any state or government. It was not created by governments and should not be changed by them. Instead, recognizing the innumerable benefits which marriage brings to society, they should act to protect and uphold marriage, not attack or dismantle it.

“This is a point of view that would have been endorsed and accepted only a few years ago, yet today advancing a traditional understanding of marriage risks one being labeled an intolerant bigot. There is no doubt that, as a society, we have become blasé about the importance of marriage as a stabilizing influence and less inclined to prize it as a worthwhile institution.

“It has been damaged and undermined over the course of a generation, yet marriage has always existed in order to bring men and women together so that the children born of those unions will have a mother and a father. “This brings us to the one perspective which seems to be completely lost or ignored: the point of view of the child. All children deserve to begin life with a mother and father; the evidence in favor of the stability and well-being which this provides is overwhelming and unequivocal. It cannot be provided by a same-sex couple, however well-intentioned they may be.

“Same-sex marriage would eliminate entirely in law the basic idea of a mother and a father for every child. It would create a society which deliberately chooses to deprive a child of either a mother or a father.

“Other dangers exist. If marriage can be redefined so that it no longer means a man and a woman but two men or two women, why stop there? Why not allow three men or a woman and two men to constitute a marriage, if they pledge their fidelity to one another? If marriage is simply about adults who love each other, on what basis can three adults who love each other be prevented from marrying?

“In November 2003, after a court decision in Massachusetts to legalize gay marriage, school libraries were required to stock same-sex literature; primary schoolchildren were given homosexual fairy stories such as King & King. Some high school students were even given an explicit manual of homosexual advocacy entitled The Little Black Book: Queer in the 21st Century. Education suddenly had to comply with what was now deemed “normal”.

“Disingenuously, the Government has suggested that same-sex marriage wouldn’t be compulsory and churches could choose to opt out. This is staggeringly arrogant. No Government has the moral authority to dismantle the universally understood meaning of marriage. Imagine for a moment that the Government had decided to legalize slavery but assured us that “no one will be forced to keep a slave”.

“Would such worthless assurances calm our fury? Would they justify dismantling a fundamental human right? Or would they simply amount to weasel words masking a great wrong? The Universal Declaration on Human Rights is crystal clear: marriage is a right which applies to men and women, “the family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State”.

“This universal truth is so self-evident that it shouldn’t need to be repeated. If the Government attempts to demolish a universally recognized human right, they will have forfeited the trust which society has placed in them and their intolerance will shame the United Kingdom in the eyes of the world.”

The editorial in a secular newspaper concluded with this identification of the Churchman,

“Cardinal O’Brien is President of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland and Britain’s most senior Catholic.”

On Sunday, August 26, 2012, at every ambo in Scotland the faithful heard a pastoral letter read. It reinforced these words from the Cardinal, “With this letter we will announce the creation of a National Commission for Marriage and the Family, a body which will be charged with promoting the true nature of marriage, it will develop an online presence and produce materials and organize events which will help Catholic families to support and sustain marriage. While we pray that our elected leaders will sustain rather than subvert marriage, we promise to continue to do everything we can to convince them that redefining marriage would be wrong for society.”

I urge all of our readers to pray for this heroic Cardinal of Scotland. We also need to imitate his effort in every Nation of the West where this “madness” has been unleashed. Do not misunderstand the teaching of the Catholic Church concerning the true nature of marriage and the family and society founded upon it. This is objective truth, revealed in the Natural Law and thus knowable and binding on all men and women in every Nation. We must defend the objectively true nature of marriage. We must resist the lies and the lure of those who seek to keep us behind our Church doors in our defense of this truth.

Yes, the Church, through Scripture and Tradition, opens up the depth of this truth concerning the nature and ends of marriage for those who believe. Yes, the Magisterium (teaching office) of the Catholic Church offers the fullness of the meaning of that truth for all who seek to find it. However, the objective nature of marriage is not simply a matter of our “religious position” as Christians. We cannot, we must not, we will not, back down from proclaiming it from the housetops. Marriage – and the family and society founded upon it- serves the true Common Good of every society. Marriage cannot ever be replaced by some counterfeit structure pretending to provide some alternative to their indispensable role.

The Cardinal declared August 26, 2012 “National Marriage Sunday” in all of the Catholic Churches in Scotland. The Pastoral Letter which was read in all of Scotland’s 500 Catholic parishes. He was forced to break off discussions with the secular government when, in spite of repeated overtures from the Catholic Church, other Christian traditions, other religious believers and an overwhelming number of other people of good will who recognize that true marriage serves the common good, the secular government announced its intention to impose its will on the whole of society and reject the Natural Law.

Get ready. Pray. Prepare. Persevere. The battle is engaged. Our Cardinals and Bishops are our teachers. We are the ones enlisted on the front lines of this historic struggle for the very future of the West. This is our hour.

When Defending Marriage is Called Hate Speech: Shooting at the Family Research Council

By Catholic Online

WASHINGTON,DC (Catholic Online) – At 11 A.M on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 28 year old Floyd Lee Corkins II, of Herndon, Va. walked into the Washington DC headquarters of the Family Research Council posing as a candidate for an internship and carrying a bag of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches.

He was also carrying a gun and multiple rounds of ammunition. He had the evil intent to kill people who worked for this public interest organization precisely because they believe that marriage is between a man and a woman and have dedicated their lives to defending the family.

The shooters evil intent was thwarted by the courage of an unarmed security guard named Leo Johnson who was shot in the arm while preventing Corkins from using the 9mm handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition to take more lives. Clearly, his heroism prevented what could have been another tragic massacre in a Nation which now seems to experience them all too frequently.

The charging affadavit of Special Agent Garrett Nabors of the F.B.I. can be read in its entirety here. Corkins was arraigned on Thursday, August 16, 2012 in Federal court.

He was charged with “Interstate Transportation of a Firearm and Ammunition” and “Assault with the Intent to Kill While Armed.” The Federal magistrate, Alan Kay, ordered that Corkins be held without bond. He also set a bond hearing for Aug. 24 and ordered a psychiatric evaluation.

For six month Corkins volunteered at the DC Center for the LGBT Community. The acronym stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgendered. The group condemned the attack through these words from their executive director:

“I was shocked to hear that someone who has volunteered with the DC Center could be the cause of such a tragic act of violence. No matter the circumstances, we condemn such violence in the strongest terms possible. We hope for a full and speedy recovery for the victim and our thoughts are with him and his family.”

Tony Perkins, the President of the Family Research Council, expressed his concern that an increasingly charged atmosphere is being promoted by groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center. This allegedly “public interest” legal group has included the Family Research Center in its list of “hate groups” because it is committed to the defense of marriage as only between one man and one woman.

On Thursday, Perkins told the Press “”Let me be clear that Floyd Corkins was responsible for firing the shot yesterday. But Corkins was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center that have been reckless in labeling organizations hate groups because they disagree with them on public policy. And I believe the Southern Poverty Law Center should be held accountable for their reckless use of terminology that is leading to the intimidation and what the FBI here has categorized as an act of domestic terrorism.”

Tony Perkins makes an important point. There are few news reports concerning this incident using the word marriage for what it is, the lifelong union between one man and one woman ordered toward love, the conception and rearing of children and the formation of family. The family is the foundation of society because it is its first vital cell.

Most of the reporting uses loaded language. The Family Research Council is accused of “opposing gay marriage” rather than defending marriage as what it is. Those who defend marriage as between one man and one woman are increasingly depicted as intolerant or, as demonstrated by the Southern Poverty Law Center, accused of using “hate speech”.

When sexual behavior between two men or two women is viewed as the foundation of some manufactured “right” to marry – and those who oppose this are characterized as being against the “freedom” to marry and “equal rights” - we must not remain silent.

True marriage is the preeminent and the most fundamental of all human social institutions. It is a relationship defined by nature itself and protected by the natural law that binds all men and women. It finds its foundation in the order of creation.

Civil institutions do not create marriage nor can they create a “right” to marry for those who are incapable of marriage. The institutions of government should, when acting properly, defend marriage against those who would redefine it.

Government has long protected and regulated marriage for the common good. For example, the ban on polygamy and age requirements were enforced in order to ensure that there was a mature decision at the basis of the Marriage contract. Heterosexual marriage, procreation, and the nurturing of children form the foundation for the family, and the family forms the foundation of civil society.

To “limit” marriage to heterosexual couples is not discriminatory now, nor has it ever been. Homosexual couples cannot bring into existence what marriage intends by its very definition. To now “confer” the benefits that have been conferred in the past only to stable married couples and families to homosexual paramours is bad public policy.

Marriage is the first vital cell of society. It creates the first society of the family wherein children are to be raised so that they can fully develop and flourish. Children have a right to a mother and a father. Yes, there are broken homes and single parent homes and we should provide a compassionate social framework for those families. However, marriage and family are the social foundation of any truly just society.

The shooting at the Family Research Center needs to be watched closely. Perhaps it was the act of a man with psychological problems. Perhaps, it reflects something more ominous. When defending marriage is called “hate speech”, the very future of western culture is placed at risk. The Family Research Council does wonderful work and deserves our prayers and full support.
